Genie Botanica is a craft studio and native market preserving ancestral art and plant wisdom in the African diaspora. Based in Florida, we provide handcrafted artisanal goods, herbal medicine and books.

On native Timucua and Apalachee land,

Our mission is to encourage holistic connection with the natural world through collaborative projects and environmental education rooted in ancient knowledge systems. Genie Botanica is a home for sustainable artistic practice and health wisdom on the foundation of indigenous spirituality, science and imagination.

Genie Botanica nurtures the connection between art and ecology. We strive to strengthen Earth consciousness and expand the lens of Black identity through the revitalization of nature-based crafts from the African diaspora and indigenous communities across the globe.

Founder and Creative Director

Alexis, named Akua in the Akan lineage from Ghana, is a visual artist, writer, researcher, and herbalist with a love for creating holistic experiences rooted in wellness and creativity. Born into a lineage of farmers in the southeastern United States, she finds magic in sharing about the nature-based technologies of visual storytelling and land cultivation.

Through ethical craft, spirituality and food justice activism, she engages intuitive research to reclaim the wisdom of her ancestors and uncover the mythical dimension of the natural world. She previously studied at Parsons School of Design, Maryland Institute College of Art and Indigi Golden Herbal Academy.

In 2021, she became a member of Tehuti Ma'at, a grassroots cooperative organization that fosters political, social and economic empowerment to people of African ascent. In 2022, she was an environmental artist and writer in residence at Fernland Studios. Her artwork has been exhibited in Florida, New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Toronto and London.

She is passionate about facilitating community workshops, nature walks, personalized coaching, and making custom artwork for all ages that explore the multifaceted use of natural materials in indigenous traditions. Infused into these offerings is a deep reverence for the evolutionary relationship between humans and plants across the globe.
